Go Figure — A Good Neighbor Multiplying His Impact!
Bob Johnson has been recognized by Loving Community with the March “Good Neighbor” award. Bob volunteers in the Lewisville community, specifically in the local schools.
Bob initially began volunteering with Loving Community in September of 2014, as a math mentor in Operation Success, an after school mentoring program operated by Loving Community for 7th graders at Durham Middle School. Bob’s infectious smile, positive outlook on life and casual attire (he religiously wears cargo shorts on any day that’s above freezing) has made him a favorite among the school’s 7th graders!
Bob, a Coppell, TX resident and native Washingtonian, has a lengthy track record of volunteerism. He fondly recollects one of his favorite roles was as a Boy Scout troop leader, combining his love of the outdoors while working with his own two sons Derick, a recent Texas A&M graduate, and Tyler currently a student there as well. Both boys have followed in their dad’s footsteps with community service as part of ethos.
Like many successful and comfortable suburbanites, Bob acknowledges his lack of awareness of the tremendous need within certain schools, like those Title One schools (a majority of students economically disadvantaged and at high risk of dropping out) in which he volunteers.
That reality has stoked Bob’s passion to not only personally volunteer, but to recruit others into this worthy avocation. Applying his entrepreneurial background as a small business owner and former project manager with Verizon, Bob has multiplied his impact by recruiting other volunteers. Entering the mentoring areas now, a majority of volunteers have come at Bob’s invitation.
Bob musingly reflects, “I am no math major, and it doesn’t take that to help. Most adults can help a 7th grader with math. The most important thing is to show up. You can make a big difference in a child’s life by just showing up!”
