How VBS & Kermit the Frog Introduced Me to Jesus – #VBS2016
Here’s a fun fact. Did you know that the origins of Vacation Bible School (VBS) date back to 1894. Who knew! I have many fun memories of attending as a kid. I loved the snow cones, games, handmade crafts, and yes, even the Bible stories always presented in fun and creative ways.
In fact as a ten year old, it was at a VBS puppet show that I made a commitment to begin to follow Jesus. — My kids have heard me say often that it was Kermit the Frog who introduced me to Jesus, even though that’s a bit of a myth!
Truth is, VBS holds a special place in my heart for lots of reasons, with one being that it was the invitation of a school friend that brought me to VBS where I began to follow Jesus in 1970, and still do forty-six years later.
With lots of gratitude and nostalgia, annually in the dog days of summer I volunteer at VBS. Most recently it has been with Lisa Dominy, Children’s Pastor and the crew from Vista Ridge United Methodist Church. It’s always a top drawer VBS!
This year’s theme is “Surf Shack” and I am a crew leader for a rambunctiously, righteous group of 20 plus second graders. I can’t hang ten like I once could, but that doesn’t mean I can’t give it a try!
Along with the surfing theme, we are learning stories about water in the Bible. Today’s story was that of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus. The kids sat on the edge of their seats as Miss Claudia and Pastor Mary Beth energetically told the epic story of Jesus baptism in the Jordan River.
That story stirred wonderful memories. You see, I’ve actually been to the Jordan River, twice! And even more special, I’ve baptized people in that very river! Pretty crazy, right? I was struck how the events and story of the day had come full circle in my own life.
And that’s why I volunteer at VBS. Maybe’s there’s a little one who will meet Jesus this week like I did — be baptized, and then who knows what might happen with his or her life!
You rock Papa Jim!
