Blessed by Great Women Leaders
I didn’t give much forethought or necessarily plan my day this way. It just kind of happened. One of those serendipitous moments where upon reflection you realize that God is always working, always revealing, always teaching. And if only I paused to listen to his whisper and see the beauty he points out. Today, thanks be to God, I think I did.
My busy calendar held a series of appointments and emails. What I did not recognize in my scheduling and workflow is that every appointment and about 90% of my emails where with women — women who are leading and modeling and contributing to the greater good of our society and God’s kingdom work.
My aha moment came as I reflected on the reality that a majority of the women in my life are some of the best leaders, pastors, teachers, mentors and friends a guy could ever want! When it comes to our good and great God, he has lavishly gifted women to be difference makers in every arena of life and in every generation.
I resonate with the sentiment expressed in the Jewish proverb that says, “God couldn’t be everywhere so he created mothers.” And I would add all women. I would not want to return to the days where women and their giftedness were relegated by society and yes, the church to a lesser role.
Echoing the words of the Apostle Paul “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” ~ Galatians 3:28, Eleanor Roosevelt, former first lady and pioneer for women’s rights in our country, famously said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your permission.”
So who did I interact with today?
My first appointment of the day brought me to Denton where I met with Susan Frank who is the founder and executive director of Hearts for Homes whose mission is to improve the living conditions of low-income senior homeowners in Denton County http://heartsforhomes.org Loving Community will be partnering with this great organization that is making a difference in the living conditions and spiritual conditions of countless senior adults.
My next tandem appointment was in Valley Ranch at Java Me Up coffee shop with Sonja Samuel and Amy Wilkins. Sonja is a remarkable leader, speaker, and pastor (not to mention a former Dallas Cowboy cheerleader)! Sonja is pastoring at at an inner city Dallas church, speaks nationally at events, mentors kids, and is beginning a new ministry. You can check out her website at http://www.sonjasamuel.com.
Amy has always been one of my favs! 🙂 I recruited and hired Amy to come to Valley Ranch in 2008 to fill the newly created position of Community & Global Missions. Amy is a great wife and mom. In addition, I love Amy’s heart for people and her amazing understanding of how to practically do missions work. She is a difference maker and has revolutionized the mission work of Valley Ranch. Check out some of their work http://vrbc.net/volunteer-opportunities/
Finally, was my email exchange with Heather Mustain my favorite daughter-in-law and the Missions Pastor at Wilshire Baptist Church. http://www.wilshirebc.org She is helping with arrangements for an upcoming training I am part of through Forge Dallas. She is an amazing follower of Jesus, friend, wife, mom, pastor and leader in the missions movement in our world.
My day was full, my heart even fuller as I reflect on the great women (and men) that God is allowing me to do life and ministry with. TOGETHER I believe we can all make a difference in bringing a little heaven to earth.
Thanks be to God!
Good words! Thanks be to God!
